Article in the weekend section of the Times

Saturday June 22 1996 -- This extract is from an article in the Times, and the picture features my Oil painting of my Husband's dog Flint.

'Gillian Harris started painting wildlife; graduating from snails to mice before turning to pets and competition horses. "Once you've done several mice there isn't the challenge to their character anymore". Mrs Harris, whose studio is just outside Chichester in West Sussex, says her prices - which start at 200 - fluctuate according to the laws of supply and demand. Her annual output is about 35 portraits a year because she divides her time between painting and sculpting. Mrs Harris prefers to meet the animal and take her own photographs. "I take several shots and use bits from each and put them all together in the picture. That way you get a more accurate portrait and, believe me, pet owners know every millimetre of their animal." If it's character she's after our spaniel is her man. A tight brief and she'll be happy. "I enjoy being told what's wanted," she says. "I'm not one of those artists who always wants to do their own thing. I enjoy meeting people and supplying what they want." She wins brownie points when she reveals that she has a Springer spaniel and is partial to the breed.' |
